Chapter Twenty-Four

I was going to lose my mind not being able to call Piper. I could deal with not being able to talk to her and her pack, my family, all week long. But I looked forward so much to our phone calls. If she had the babies and something went wrong, someone would get in touch with me, right? I kept trying to tell myself that no news was good news, but I was going out of my skin.

The guys and I couldn’t go out tonight like we had planned now that we were on restriction, and I didn’t want to deal with their questions. I couldn’t tell them the truth, and I didn’t want to lie to them.

Instead, I cleaned my room obsessively and carried my laundry down the fire stairs to the basement, passing Faro and Jensen on their way out after the gym.

I almost forgot my laundry, after I got lost reading my book, so it was after midnight when I slipped down the hallway again to get my laundry. Curfew was at eleven, and the halls were already quiet.

If I’d just gone to a normal college, there would be no curfews, no restriction. My cell phone wouldn’t be hidden in Rafe’s desk drawer. Piper had tried to convince me to do just that.

I still had good reason to want to be here, I reminded myself as I pulled my warm, dry clothes out into the laundry basket. I had good reasons besides being too stubborn to quit when everyone else wanted me to.

Besides, I really didn’t have anywhere else to go. What was I going to do? Spend the rest of my life pretending to be normal?

As I straightened with my laundry basket, I breathed in the scent of Tide and…something wrong. Something alive.

I spun around.

Faro stood in the doorway to the laundry room.

“Good work out there today,” he said, leaning in the doorway, one hand in his pocket. His eyes were narrow, as if he was a little drunk. “You surprised me.”

“Thanks.” I set the laundry basket on top of the dryer, keeping one hand on it, eyeing him warily. “It turned out we can all work as a team.”

“Amazing.” His lips parted in a smile. “We should do more of that.”

“Does that mean we’re calling a truce?”

“Yeah,” he said. “I don’t want to fight with you, Maddie.”

My first name on his lips surprised me. It didn’t feel like anyone called me Maddie anymore.

“You’re special,” he told me. “That’s why some of us didn’t want you here. You’re too special to waste as just another warrior. Any of us can do this.”

He raised his hand, encompassing the whole academy. “But you’re meant to breed. To create the next generation.”

Alarm bells sounded in my head. We were in the basement alone. There hadn’t been anyone else around when I walked past the gym and dojo; almost all the lights had been turned off except for the hallway and laundry room lights that always stayed on.

“Like I said, I’m a little young right now.
